Medicine Product Description
Indications:
For the treatment of susceptible infections such as bone and joint infections, bronchitis, gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, perotonitiis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin infections and urinary tract infections. It is also used for surgical prophylaxis
Precautions:
Cephalosporin antibiotics may in general be given safely to patients who are hypertensive to penicillin, although cross-reactions have been reported. Special care is indicated in patients who experiences anaphylactic reactions to penicillin.
Other Drug Interactions:
Foods, Drugs. Devices, and Cosmetics Act prohibits dispensing without prescription.
Dosage:
Intravenous/ Intramuscular
(Adult):
750mg every 8 hours
For severe infections:
750mg every 6 hours
Neonates:
Similar total daily dose but in 2 to 3 divided doses.
Adult with Pneumonia:
1.5g 2x daily
Lyme disease in adults:
oral dose of 500mg twice daily for 20 days
Meningitis due to sensitive strains of bacteria:
3g every 8 hours
Gonorrhea:
1.5g I/M dose divided by 2 injection sites.
I/M dose of 125mg children
For Surgical Infection Prophylaxis:
1.5g IV before procedure
750mg IM every 8 hours for up to 24-48 hours depending on the procedure.
